In February I finally sat down to read Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. I’d had the e-book for a while, but I just wasn’t in the mood for something like it the last time I picked it up. Since then, I’d also picked myself up a physical copy of the second book, yet I wasn’t any closer to reading them. So when trying to decide on an audiobook to read, I found this one on Scribd – yes, I know I’m supposed to be reading more audiobooks I don’t own on there, but the third one counts for that – I knew that it was about time that I finally got to this one.

This review is only going to cover the first three books. If you’ve heard anything about this series, it’s probably that you should read the main three books one after the other. The Box in the Woods and the new one coming out this year, do follow Stevie and her friends again. But each of those is a standalone mystery in different locations. I plan on reading The Box in the Woods this month, and I’m very excited to do so.

Truly Devious follows Stevie Bell, a teenage girl who wants to one day be a top detective. With some luck, she managed to get into Ellingham Academy, a prestigious academy where only the best students attend and there’s no obvious application. Back in the 1930s, the wife of the school’s founder and their young daughter disappeared after the founder received a mysterious letter. Stevie has been fascinated with this case for years and she plans to solve it.

Usually, I would try to post an ARC review before the publication date, but due to some bad luck, Harper360 did not manage to get me a copy until after it was out! Due to that, I did put it off until I had a few other proofs to read. I’m actually kind of glad I did, as I already have a copy of The Sound of Stars to read after this. I didn’t realise that they’re set in the same world until I checked the reviews, so heck yeah!

The Kindred follows Felix, a duke who would love to be a musician. And Joy, his kindred, who is poor and is stuck within the constraints of her culture. When the royal family is killed, Felix and Joy are both blamed. They have to run away until they can find out what is really going on. They get stranded on earth, and the chaos begins.

It’s rare for me to review a book on here that I bought for myself. But I have a reason for posting a review for this one…that being that I’m on an Instagram tour for the second book! I’m very excited to get my copy and give it a read, and so I finally got my ass into gear and read this one! It had been in a few TBR piles, but when I had to cut the pile down for various reasons…it kept being the book I removed.

So this is the first book in a prequel duology to De Castell’s Spellslinger series. It follows Ferius, the Argosi mentor from the original books as a child, as she finds her way. Her goal is to hunt down and kill the mages who killed her family, but on her journey, she meets an Argosi wanderer called Durrall, who tries to teach her their ways.

I don’t get emails with authors asking me to review their books very often. And when I do, I tend to be super picky. But when Janina Franck contacted me about her YA sci-fi with space witches and an ace/aro protagonist. I was intrigued. I’m so glad I said yes to A Spark In Space, as otherwise, I’d have never heard of it. Instead, I get to shout about it to you guys and the world. And you’re gonna want to read this book!

Space witches are a powerful type of person who can control energy and technology. There are supposedly no human space witches… Until Tabea. After she saves a boy from a destroyed ship, Tabea has to work to hide her powers more than ever. But something happens, and she winds up in the custody of the penyales, an alien species known for hating humans. But for not being able to lie. They ask for her help and promise to help her find her friends. But can anything that’s happened recently be trusted?

Book Review: In the Ravenous Dark by A.M Strickland

I’ve been hyped for this book ever since I first heard about it. The second I saw that it was up for request on NetGalley? I was over there and requesting it. My request was granted pretty quickly, but it’s taken me until now to finally get to it for various reasons. The moment I started this book, I hoped to be dragged into a fascinating world with characters I would die for.

And I kind of got that.

In the Ravenous Dark is centred around Rovan, a young woman who has grown up trying to hide her magic after seeing her father taken away by guards. Those with magic like theirs, blood magic, are taken to the castle to join their ranks. And then are given a ghost guardian to keep an eye on them. Rovan never wanted that, but after saving a girl in view of everyone, she is taken to the castle to join her father and take on his bloodline.
